The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has notified Dale Sides, Waynoka City Administrator, that the restoration of the Waynoka Depot is
among the 41 projects approved for funding by the Oklahoma Transportation Commission. Richard Andrews, Special Projects Branch
Manager, made the announcement following the June 4, 2002 meeting of the Commission. Commissioner Edward Sutter, Alva attorney, represents
District 6 on the Commission.
One hundred thirteen proposals were considered for TEA-21 funding. A
special Transportation Enhancement Advisory Committee composed of
individuals with a broad-based interest and expertise in transportation
evaluated the merit of each application. The Committee made
recommendations to the Commission.
The estimated cost of the Waynoka project is $300,000. ODOT will
provide 80%, which is $240,000, with the Waynoka Historical Society
responsible for the 20% match of $60,000. The scope of work includes
restoration of the depot, paving of parking areas, landscaping of the
Depot-Harvey House complex and finishing the transportation museum.
According to Sandie Olson, Waynoka Historical Society president, these
funds will allow the completion of the restoration of one of Oklahoma's
most significant sites in transportation history. More than $1.3 million
has been spent to date in the restoration of the Harvey House and some
exterior work on the Depot.
Funds for the TEA-21 projects will be available in October 2002.
